The pandemic state of obesity has become a serious public health issue. Our research is focusing on complications to obesity such as type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and poor bone health. Our pathophysiological approach is particularly focusing on investigating the significance and pathophysiology of ectopic fat accumulation, and its local and systemic consequences. To this part, we are focusing on the role of membrane fatty acid transporters, in particular the CD36 scavenger receptor. Our studies mainly involve individuals with various degrees of obesity and obesity related complications. Furthermore, pathophysiological hypotheses are investigated on cell culture set-up’s.
